The role of Ian Spalter, Head of Design at Instagram, is both visionary and strategic. It’s a role that traverses strategy and the scoping of new app functionality, the development of business tools as well as user-enhancing experiences, and the co-ordination of large teams to ensure healthy collaboration between product engineering, design, research and content. Ian is the gatekeeper of all things ‘Brand Instagram’.
Ian finds inspiration in unlikely places – his study of the thought processes of professional comedians, for instance, provided insights into new ways to contextualise and iterate raw data in a business environment – and, importantly, to distinguish between “good laughs” and “bad laughs”. Ian’s knack for inspiring creativity and his proven lateral thinking abilities were previously applied to leadership roles at YouTube, Foursquare and Nike.
